We are proud to offer a weekday preschool ministry for children from ages 2-5 years. This preschool has operated since 1971, and has continued to change and improve to meet the needs of the community. Our greatest desire is that the Weekday Preschool is a safe and enjoyable place for your child to grow developmentally, socially, and spiritually. Our program is licensed by the Tennessee Department of Human Services and has received a top rating of 3 stars by the Tennessee Star-Quality Child Care Program.
SCHEDULE: All classes meet on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 9:00am – 12:00 noon. The program runs from August until May. There is no preschool during June and July. The 2009-10 session begins August 17. Please note: Children age 3 and older must be toilet-trained.
REGISTRATION: Fall registration begins in March each year and continues throughout the year as space is available. There is a non-refundable $60 registration fee that must accompany the registration forms. Enrollment is complete when all forms, immunization record, and fee are submitted. PLEASE NOTE: We are now full and are no longer taking registrations for the 2009-10 session. If you wish, you can be placed on a waiting list to be contacted if we should have any openings.
TUITION PAYMENTS: Tuition for preschool is $125/month, with a 20% discount for siblings. Monthly tuition is due by the 10th of each month, unless other arrangements are made with the director. There is a $10 late fee for tuition not received by the deadline. If no payment is received by the end of the month, your child may not continue to attend until the payment and late fee are received.
STAFF: The teachers at First Baptist Preschool are highly qualified Christian women from a variety of educational backgrounds. Each classroom has a lead teacher and an assistant. All preschool staff are carefully screened prior to hiring, including a criminal background check and drug screening. Each staff member is trained in infant and child CPR and First Aid, and must complete additional training annually related to Early Childhood Education.
CURRICULUM: Each classroom uses the FunShine
Express Early Learning Curriculum, as well as various Bible-based resources. All classes have daily planned activities that are developmentally and age appropriate. We are committed to teaching children the way they learn best, which is through play. Occasionally, educational videos will be shown in class. Parents will be notified in advance as to the title of the video, its content/purpose and the day to be shown. All videos will be age appropriate.
Each Wednesday, classes attend Chapel. This brief time will include songs and a Bible story taught by the Minister of Preschool and Children, Michael Spitzer. Bible stories, songs, and prayer will also be shared with your child daily.
Parent/teacher conferences will be held in the spring. You may also request a conference with your child's teacher at any time throughout the school year.
SNACK: A healthy snack and milk/ 100% apple juice will be provided daily. Please note any food allergies on your registration form, and make sure your child's teacher is also aware.
PARTIES AND PROGRAMS: Individual classes will have four parties during the year including Harvest, Christmas, Valentines, and Easter. Parents may also schedule a birthday party for their child by contacting the teacher ahead of time. We will also have a Field Day in the spring. The entire preschool will put on a program for parents at Thanksgiving and Graduation. There will be other programs/guest speakers for the children throughout the year.
DISCIPLINE POLICY: Corporal punishment will not be used at First Baptist Church Joelton. Most mis-behaviors can be handled within the classroom setting. Occasionally, time away from the group may be necessary. If serious behavior problems persist, a conference with the teacher and director will be scheduled to develop a plan to modify behavior. If harmful behavior persists, the FBCJ Weekday Preschool reserves the right to remove a child from the program.
DROP OFF/PICK UP:School begins at 9:00 a.m. Children will not be allowed in the classroom until 8:50 a.m. This allows teachers preparation time for the day. You may walk your child in, or may use the carpool line. During carpool, there are 2 staff members outside to greet you and your child. We will walk your child from the car to their classroom. Carpool drop-off is available from 8:50-9:10 a.m. After this time, you must walk your child in.
School ends at 12 noon. You may again walk in to pick up your child, or use the carpool line. It is extremely important that you be on time to pick up your child. After 12:00, teachers are responsible for cleaning and straightening up their rooms. SEE LATE FEE POLICY
Your child must be signed in and out each day. They will only be released to persons on your transportation plan, unless prior authorization is given. **Children will not be released, even with prior authorization, to anyone appearing unsafe to transport children (i.e. intoxicated, out of control, etc). In this instance, an emergency contact will be called to pick up the child.**
LATE FEE POLICY: For every minute after 12:10 (to allow for carpool time) you are late, you will be charged $1.00 per minute, payable to the teacher. There are no exceptions, so please be prepared to pay the teacher immediately for her extra time caring for your child. Arriving a few minutes before 12 will insure a prompt pick-up.
HEALTH ISSUES:Each child must have a current proof of a physical examination and immunizations on file in the Preschool office. Your pediatrician can fax a copy of the “yellow card” directly to the church at 615-876-0709. If your child has any signs of illness (fever, persistent coughing, diarrhea, vomiting, pink eye, undetermined skin rash, etc.) please keep them home until symptom-free for at least 24 hours. No medications will be given at preschool. If your child becomes ill while at school, we will call the parents to come and pick up the child immediately.
FIRST AID/MEDICAL EMERGENCIES: Our staff will administer basic first aid as needed. In the case of a medical emergency, we will contact the parents first, and if unsuccessful, the designated emergency contact second. For life-threatening emergencies, EMS will be called. Please notify the director of any phone number or address changes throughout the year.
SAFETY: All teachers are trained to handle emergency situations, such as fire, tornado, or other environmental issues. Regular drills will be held with the classes throughout the year. Please
see emergency plan below.
The church building remains locked at all times, and can be entered only by activating the intercom system at the front entrance. Outside doors to classrooms also remain locked.
INCLEMENT WEATHER: In the case of inclement weather, you may call the preschool office directly at 876-8763 after 6:30 a.m for information about closing. You may also watch the major news networks for information about closing. Should there be a need to close preschool early, parents will be notified by the director via phone call. Please make sure your emergency phone numbers are kept current.
GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE: If issues arise that are of concern to you, please follow this procedure:
Share your concern with your child's teacher if it is related to your child or the classroom.
Share your concern with the Weekday Education Director if your concern is not resolved with the teacher, or if it is with something other than the classroom. If you feel additional assistance is needed, you may contact the Minister of Preschool and Children to set up a meeting (876-0527).
PERSONAL SAFETY CURRICULUM INFORMATION
(REQUIRED FOR CHILDREN AGE 3 - 5)
Tennessee law requires that children ages 3-5 in licensed child care facilities receive instruction in personal safety, including child sexual abuse prevention. This is not a sex education program.
We play a partnership role with you in insuring the healthy development and safety of your child.
Beginning in February, your child’s teacher will tell stories and conduct activities concerning such topics as: self esteem, family and friends, feelings, body parts, stranger safety, fire safety, car safety, water safety, and problem solving. The teachers will also talk about private body parts and what to do should someone try to touch those areas. We use an excellent curriculum called “Keeping Kids Safe” which is approved by the Department of Human Services. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me or your child’s teacher.
We will also cover this information at our parent meeting at the start of the school year. The curriculum will be available at that time for you to examine. It is also available in my office for view at any time.
EMERGENCY PLAN
Below is our emergency evacuation plan. Please read carefully so that you are familiar with the procedure should an emergency ever arise.
FIRE EVACUATION: All children will participate in fire drills monthly. Each classroom has an evacuation floor plan posted just inside the doorway. Children will exit the building via the door in their classroom opening to the playground. They will proceed to the gravel parking lot farthest from the building by the dumpsters.
TORNADO/SEVERE WEATHER: All children will participate in regular severe weather drills. The tornado evacuation floor plan is also located just inside the classroom doorway. Children will exit their classroom via the door to the hallway, and will be taken to room 109, which is an inner room on the first floor, (by the adult restrooms) and is our designated safe place. Their backpacks will be taken with them.
OFF-SITE EVACUATION: If an emergency arises requiring us to evacuate the building, we would transport the children to Joelton Elementary School across the street. This is only in severe circumstances requiring immediate evacuation. In this case, teachers will take their class emergency forms and the daily Sign In clipboard with them in order to make emergency phone calls to you.
